Alumni Spotlight: Hanover Recruiting at American University

MCaugheyAmerican University – Michael Caughey, Senior Research Associate (Survey) – K-12

In brief, what is your role at Hanover?

I work as a Senior Research Associate specializing in Survey research for K-12, though I have been known to dip into both Higher Education and Enterprise from time to time as needed.

Why did you decide to work at Hanover?

I decided to work at Hanover thanks to another AU alum who worked at the company at the time. Moreover, I was looking for a challenging and engaging research opportunity that took advantage of my skills.

In your opinion, what sets Hanover apart from other organizations?

I think what really sets Hanover apart is the incredibly diverse array of topics that you’ll find yourself working on in a given week. Oftentimes you will find yourself working on a single project, but other times you could be working on analyzing the results of a school climate survey, uploading a survey about English Language Learning (ELL) opportunities, or even producing some quick topline results for one of our Enterprise clients. There’s really never a dull day at Hanover!

Why should graduates at your alma mater be interested in working at Hanover?

Few other organizations offer the same combination of variety and experience. I have worked on so many different projects at Hanover that I feel like I can handle just about anything that’s thrown at me, and be able to turn out a high-quality product. Hanover’s helped me to feel more confident in my capabilities and further refine my talents.

What is your favorite part of your job/the company?

There are many (the snack offerings are quite good), but I have to say that I really enjoy the community service opportunities for a unique reason. First, there are many chances to get involved in community service at Hanover. Second, every year we do a ‘Day of Service’ where we go out and help organizations in the DC Metro Area for a half-day. This year, I helped out at the Washington Humane Society and got to meet so many of the good people who find homes for the animals, as well as the animals themselves. The very next day I came back with my wife and we adopted a cat that I got to know through the volunteer experience! All of this is organized by our Human Resources department, which I have to confess is easily one of the best HR departments out there and is one of the real highlights of Hanover.

Hanover will be at AU on Thursday, September 29. See you there!
