Hanover Organization of Women (HOW) Kick-Off

In March, Hanover’s Women in Research committee was re-launched as the Hanover Organization of Women (HOW). This new name emphasizes the organization’s goal of connecting women across all departments through mentorship, lunch and learn workshops, and networking opportunities. Events in 2012 included a director Q & A panel, a “mocktails” luncheon, and a networking happy hour.

The 2013 calendar will be populated by activities suggested by the 40+ participants at HOW’s recent kick-off reception. This reception included round-table discussions facilitated by Managing Director of Client Solutions, Jen Vaziralli, and featured hot topics such as career pathing, professional development, gender in the workplace, and company culture. This event was held after-hours on March 7th on the 12th floor of our K Street office and provided an exceptional opportunity for networking to occur across departments and managerial levels. Additionally, this event generated exciting ideas and showed that similar trends emerge for all employees, regardless of department or position. Said one participant: “this event was very helpful and supportive. HOW makes me more excited to work here.” Certainly all those in attendance left our round-tables feeling inspired by their peers, excited for HOW’s potential, and enlightened by speaking with different employees.

While some HOW initiatives will continue to be designed specifically for female employees, many ideas generated by the group are intended to serve and benefit all Hanoverians. For example, on 3/14 (Pi Day), HOW hosted a company-wide National Pi Day bake sale. The $346.14 raised by this event will benefit House of Ruth, a DC nonprofit organization serving women and children who have experienced domestic abuse, poverty, and homelessness. Nutella-Stuffed Cinnamon Sugar Muffins and Cheesecake won the top bids – each selling for $40. Other sweet highlights: Mango Mousee, Cranberry Coffee Cake, and Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies. Thanks to great participation, Hanoverians had the opportunity to enjoy delicious treats and support a great cause!
